James Fairhurst served as Sergeant and later Company Quartermaster Sergeant in the 4th and 5th Territorial Battalions, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. He was awarded the T.F.E.M. per Army Order 372 of 1916, and a clasp per Army Order 437 of 1926. He also served in the Labour Corps.
