Stanley Coles served as Company Sergeant Major in the London Electrical Engineers, Royal Engineers, prior to being commissioned Second Lieutenant 5th Battalion, Norfolk Regiment, on 4 April 1914. He reverted to the Royal Engineers as a temporary Lieutenant on 23 January 1915, and later served in the 27th London Electrical Engineers Anti-Aircraft Battalion. He was promoted Major on 6 May 1938, and was awarded the Efficiency Decoration the following year (London Gazette 28 March 1939). He retired, having attained the age limit, on 8 June 1940.
