James Marriott was born in Leicester and enlisted in the Leicestershire Regiment direct from the 3rd (Militia) Battalion in October 1897, aged 18 years. He was not, however, present at Atbara or Khartoum, not arriving in Egypt until February 1900. He returned to the U.K. in December 1902 and was discharged in September 1909.
