James Redwood entered the France/Flanders theatre of war as a Company Sergeant-Major in the 1st Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment on 7 September 1914. Later commissioned, he attained the rank of Lieutenant on 25 June 1916 (His MIC entry confirms the clasp to his 1914 Star and under ‘Corps’ lists his unit as ‘2nd Bn. Leicester R. “F” Stokes Mortar Bty.’); sold with copied group photograph of the officers of the 2nd Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment, January 1915 - which includes Redwood.
