Edward Craythorne was born in Leicester and enlisted in the Leicestershire Regiment in December 1867, aged 17 years. He subsequently witnessed active service in the Second Afghan War 1878-80, when he was present at Ali Musjid, and was advanced to Corporal in November 1880 and to Sergeant in December 1882. On being discharged from the 17th Regiment in the rank of Colour-Sergeant in April 1888, Craythorne joined the Army Service Corps and was discharged for a final time in April 1894.
