D.C.M. London Gazette 29 August 1917: ‘For conspicuous gallantry during a raid on the enemy’s trenches. He was near an officer when the latter fell wounded into a shell crater. After the raid he came back and twice subsequently led out search parties under heavy fire to look for the officer, but was unable to find him.’
