Richard Bent was baptized at Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, on 24 June 1778. He was appointed Ensign on 5 December 1796, and arrived in India in February 1797, where he was promoted to Lieutenant the following December in the 7th Bengal N.I. He was attached to the 3rd Battalion, Bengal Native Volunteers, at Seringapatam. Appointed Adjutant, 2/7th N.I. 1803-05, and served during the operations against the Rane of Gohad, including the capture of Gohad in 1806. Promoted to Captain-Lieutenant in October 1807 and resigned in April 1809.
