Private Alfred John Brown was killed in action at the assault and capture of the Siah Sang Heights on 13 December 1879, in which one squadron of the 9th Lancers was engaged, Captain Butson, Sergeant-Major Spittle, and 4 men, being killed, and two officers and 8 men being wounded, in addition to 12 horses killed and wounded, in a splendidly-delivered charge, in which the enemy were effectively routed.
