Private Frederick George Newell, 2nd Battalion Coldstream Guards, entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 12 August 1914. Served in the 4th Guards Brigade, 2nd Division, in Haig’s I Army Corps. Involved in the heavy fighting at Villers Cotterets on 1 September 1914. For his services as a Postman in the London Postal Region, he was awarded the I.S.M. (London Gazette 16 May 1947). With copied gazette extracts and m.i.c. - clasp confirmed.
