John Evans was born in Wolverhampton, lived in Binley, Coventry and enlisted at Nuneaton, Warwickshire. Serving with the 1st Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 22 August 1914. The battalion formed part of the 10th Infantry Brigade, 4th Division, in Pulteney’s III Army Corps.

On 1 July 1916 the 10th Brigade were situated opposite Beaumont Hamel, with the Warwicks and the 1st Royal Irish Fusiliers in reserve, providing reinforcements to hard pressed troops at the front. On 12 October 1916 the Warwicks were involved in the fight for the Transloy Ridges. Evans was killed in action on that day, aged 25 years. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. He was the son of Edward and Mary E. Evans, of 16 Grange Avenue, Binley, Coventry. With copied research.
