Alexander Menzies was born in the Parish of Dunkeld, Perthshire, and enlisted into the 71st Foot on 12 January 1806. He fought in Captain Cother’s Company in the Peninsula, and in Captain Reed’s Company at Waterloo. He was transferred to the 3rd Royal Regiment of Veterans on 25 April 1824, and discharged on reduction on 24 October 1825, with a total of 21 years 286 days service, the latter 10 years as a Sergeant. He was admitted to an out-pension at Chelsea Hospital on 21 November 1821, to reside at Edinburgh, and died on 15 July 1857.
