Richard Gaskell attested for the Royal Engineers on 28 November 1855. He served in the East Indies for 2 years 4 months and was ‘present at the Relief of Lucknow, battle of Cawnpore, engagement at Allum Bagh, siege of Lucknow, affair at Fort Rooach, engagement at Allegung, operation against Gwalior, Mutiny at Cawnpore, captures of Bareilly, Buxryat and Fort Omreach, for which he received the Indian War Medal and two clasps.’ He afterwards served for 1 year and 7 months in China ‘and was present with the Expeditionary Force at Pehtang, affair at Sinhoo, capture of Tang Koo, and capture of Taku Forts, and was present before Pekin, for which he received the China War Medal and two clasps.’ He was discharged as being medically unfit for further Military service at Chatham on 26 November 1864.
