James Crowder Eastcott was born on 24 April 1829, and was first appointed Acting Assistant Surgeon in the Royal Navy on 28 March 1855, aged 26, aboard H.M.S. Russell, in which ship he served in the Baltic. He served in China during 1860 aboard H.M.S. Snake. Eastcott was promoted Surgeon in May 1865, Staff Surgeon in 1875, and Fleet Surgeon in August 1877, retiring in April 1884.
