Charles Edgar Robinson was born at Dungannon, Co. Tyrone in January 1879 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in May 1896. He subsequently witnessed active service aboard H.M.S. Undaunted off China in the Boxer Rebellion and was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in February 1912, shortly before being appointed a 2nd Mate. During the Great War, he was one of just 28 Chief Officers, Senior Mates and 2nd Mates to serve in the Coast Guard Permanent Cruiser Service, so it is likely his 1914-15 Star trio inscribed as ‘2nd Mate’ is especially rare. Robinson was appointed a Senior Mate in October 1919, very probably the month of his retirement.
