William Thomas Child was born at Stratford, Essex in July 1879 and entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Electrician 4th Class in September 1902. He subsequently witnessed active service aboard H.M.S. Fox in the Somaliland operations of 1902-04, and aboard the battleship Iron Duke from August 1914 until the end of hostilities, including the Battle of Jutland. Awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in October 1917, he was pensioned ashore as a Chief Electrical Artificer 1st Class in September 1924.
