Harry Sidney Smith was born at Kingston, Hampshire in May 1866 and entered the Royal Navy as Carpenter’s Crew in January 1888. Awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in February 1907, he was pensioned ashore in May 1911, but was recalled in the Great War and served as a Shipwright aboard the armed merchant cruiser Patia from December 1914 to November 1916 and, after time ashore at Victory II, aboard the cruiser Arrogant, flagship of Vice-Admiral Sir Roger Keyes in the Dover patrol, from May 1918 until the end of the War. He was demobilised in February 1919.
