James Gallagher, who joined the Royal Navy as a Writer rating in 1960, was commissioned as a Sub. Lieutenant (S.D. - Special Duties) in January 1973. Having gained advancement to Lieutenant-Commander (S.D.) in April 1984, he joined the Leander-class frigate Apollo in the same year, but died as a result of an accident while similarly employed on 13 February 1986.
