Recent research has revealed that “King George” was one of two men with these names among the 88 Kroomen employed aboard H.M.S. Victor Emanuel during the Ashantee operations of 1873-74. Only one of them was awarded the “Coomassie” clasp, together with another 16 fellow Kroomen, all of whom would have received unnamed medals.
