J. McMorran was born in St. George’s, Dublin. He attested for the 45th Company 13th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry on 10 January 1900 and served with them in South Africa, 13 March 1900-4 March 1901. He was taken prisoner at Lindley, 31 May 1900 but later released. He was discharged at his own request on 3 April 1901 but re-engaged at Dublin on 1 February 1902. He served as a Corporal in the 29th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry, serving in South Africa, 10 May-22 October 1902, being discharged on 28 October 1902.
The action at Lindley made a lasting impression him, because in the ‘Descriptive Marks’ section of his second set of service papers is the note of a tattoo “Lindley 1900” on his left arm. With copied service notes.
