William Lucas was born in Holbrook, Ipswich, Suffolk. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the 9th Regiment at Woodbridge, April 1846, aged 17 years, 11 months. With them he served in China for 3 years, 4 months; the Crimea for 2 years, 2 months and in India for 10 years, 5 months. He was discharged in March 1868. During his 21 years service his name had appeared 25 times in the ‘Defaulter’s Book’ and he had been tried by Court Martial on six occasions.
