John Ferguson Menzies was educated at Denstone College, Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, 1910-14. Serving as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion Sherwood Foresters, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war in May 1915. Later transferred to the 1st Battalion and at the end of 1915 is listed as serving on the Staff of the 1st Battalion. In April 1916 he is listed as being a Special Reserve Lewis Gun Officer. Menzies was posted missing during the battle of the Aisne (April/May 1918) and was held as a prisoner-of-war until the end of hostilities. For his wartime services he was awarded the M.C.
