Citation: ‘For gallantry and devotion to duty when in the attack near Zillebeke near Ypres, on 20th September 1917.’ (ref. British Gallantry Awards, The Sherwood Foresters, compiled by C. Housley).
George Tomlinson was born in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. A Besom maker by occupation, he attested for the Sherwood Foresters at Chesterfield on 10 September 1914, aged 34 years. Posted to the 11th (Service) Battalion, he entered France on 27 August 1915, serving there until November 1917. On 22 March 1917 he was subject to 4 days field punishment for being ‘habitually dirty on parade’ (!). Despite the grime, he won the Military Medal on 20 September 1917 for his gallantry in an attack near Zillebeke. In November, Tomlinson was transferred with his battalion to Italy, serving there, November 1917-January 1919. He was transferred to Class ‘Z’ Reserve on 1 March 1919. With copied research.
