Charles Hayes was born in Brinklow, near Coventry. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the 95th (Derbyshire) Regiment at Coventry on 9 October 1854, aged 17 years, 6 months. Served with the regiment for 15 months in the Crimea and for nearly 11 years in the East Indies. Serving in both the Crimean War and the suppression of the Indian Mutiny, he escaped injury, only to be wounded by a sword cut to his left shoulder inflicted by a Muslim fanatic at Hyderabad on 25 October 1864. Hayes was discharged on the termination of his second period of service on 3 July 1878. In later life, he was employed as a Grocer and lived at 64 Bedford Street, Derby. He died on 25 September 1912.
