James Cochrane enlisted at Dundee. Initially with H.F. Company, Royal Engineers. Serving with the 16th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment (Chatsworth Rifles), he was killed in action, France/Flanders, on 3 August 1917, aged 26 years. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. He was the son of Mrs F. Cochrane, of 5 Bell Lane, Broughty Ferry, Dundee and husband of Agnes Scrimgeour (formerly Cochrane), of 46 Kemback Street, Dundee.
