Arthur Woodhouse Ellis was appointed Midshipman, Royal Navy, on 1 September 1941, and was serving in H.M.S. Neptune when she was sunk off the Libyan coast as part of the Malta Convoys on 19 December 1941. He was advanced Sub-Lieutenant on 16 June 1943 and Lieutenant on 19 June 1945, and was Mentioned in Despatches for services in Korean waters whilst serving aboard the sloop H.M.S. Crane. He transferred to the Retired List with the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 16 March 1953.
