Thomas Lundie & Co. were located at 3 Water Street and Peter Lane; they operated as ironmongers and manufacturers from 1837. The vessel, Earl of Elgin, was built by Lairds in Birkenhead and launched in June 1844, arrived in Jamaica on 19 August 1844, and was employed in carrying passengers and freight around the island; the ship was sold to the Haitian government in 1847.
