Alexander III (1249-1286), First coinage, Sterling, type IIIc, Berwick, Robert, ro be rt on b, pellets on sceptre handle, ‘scissors’ x, 1.58g/3h (cf. SCBI 35, 105-6; B 19b, fig. 114B; S 5043). Slightly weak in one quarter, good very fine, toned £200-£260

At the start of the Long Cross coinage, minting was confined to Berwick, Roxburgh and possibly Glasgow. Around 1250, the recoinage got into full swing and a number of mints were opened across the country. The coins of type III represent the bulk of this coining activity.
