Charles Beare Hooper was born in Torquay, Devon, in 1896. An apprentice motor engineer by occupation he enlisted into the 2nd Devon Battery, 4th Wessex Brigade, Royal Field Artillery at Paignton, Devon, on 14 May 1912. Embodied for service during the Great War on 5 August 1914, he embarked for India on 9 October 1914; transferring to the Royal Artillery (Regular Army) on 1 January 1917, he was appointed Acting Corporal (DR Section) at Poona on 16 March 1917. Disembarking at Mesopotamia on 12 October 1917 he was posted to Army Signal Company at Margil on 29 October 1917, and subsequently transferred to the Army Signal Company, Baghdad. Demobilised on 31 March 1920, he returned to his previous occupation as a Motor Mechanic, and died at Yeovil, Somerset on 24 January 1972, aged 75.
