Thomas Donnellan attested for the 97th Regiment of Foot in the Athlone District on 27 March 1838. Initially posted to Athlone, Parsonstown, Dublin and Newbridge, he was raised Corporal 14 April 1840 and embarked from Ireland to Corfu on 30 January 1841. Appointed Orderly Room Clerk three months later, he was made Sergeant Probationer and spent the next six years on the island - most likely barracked at the Old Fortress. Transferred from Malta to Halifax (Nova Scotia) in July 1848, Donnellan returned to Walmer in June 1853 and enjoyed a year of home service in Kent and at Windsor. He subsequently fought in the Crimea before Sebastopol and during the Indian Mutiny, being later recorded as having died at Lucknow on 12 May 1858.
