Andrew Connell was born on 4 July 1880, the son of Andrew Connell of West Kilbride, Ayrshire, Scotland. He served with the South African Mounted Rifles from 11 January 1907, including almost a year in German South West Africa from 1914-15, before attesting for the 4th South African Infantry at Pretoria in February 1918. Embarked at Cape Town per H.M.T. Caronia 4 March 1918, he sometime transferred to the 1st Regiment and was killed on the Western Front on 18 October 1918. He is buried in Le Cateau Military Cemetery, France.
