Peacock Hotel, 26 Market place, renamed the Peacock & Royal Hotel in 1880 after a visit by the Duke of Edinburgh and his entourage and now the site of Boots, proprietors Daniel Jackson Jr (†1868, aged 52), 1840-68, Robert Henry Clemow (1851-1913), 1887-1913; Red Lion, 22 Bargate, until the end of 2008 the site of Woolworths, proprietor Thomas Poland Minton (†1869, aged 43), 1851-69; Boston Hotel Co, incorporated 1893, acquired assets of the Red Lion Hotel and installed Matthew Enderby, a director, as proprietor, but Enderby retired 1900; Bainbridge’s, drapers and clothiers, est. by 1842
