John Steele was born in North Berwick, Scotland, in 1884. A miner by occupation, he attested for service in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force in March 1916 and was serving as a Gunner with the 1st Division Ammunition Column, Canadian Field Artillery, when he was killed in action on 28 June 1916. He was buried in the Railway Dugouts Burial Ground, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium; sold with copied service papers.
