‘The British steamship Falcon, of Glasgow, was wrecked in the North Atlantic Ocean on 16 November 1890. The lifeboat of the Pennsylvania, of Philadelphia, was launched in very heavy seas, and at great risk took off the Falcon’s crew. After 11 days on board the Pennsylvania the survivors were landed at Philadelphia.’ (ref. The Sea Gallantry Medal, by R. J. Scarlett).

One S.G.M. (Foreign Service) in gold and four in silver were awarded for this rescue.
