William Henry Tatton was born in Portsmouth, on 22 February 1824. Serving in the Royal Navy, he was appointed a Gunner 3rd Class in January 1857, being advanced to 2nd Class in November 1860 and 1st Class in July 1865.
Gunner Tatton and a boat’s crew of four men from H.M.S. Oberon, went to the assistance of nine seamen of a merchant ship, off Buenos Ayres, and rescued them; one of the boat’s crew by the name of Joshua Chesterman being drowned. With copied service papers and details of the rescue.
