Andrew Grandfield was born in Dingle, Co. Kerry, Ireland in January 1827. He joined the Royal Navy in January 1852 and served the war against Russia in the Baltic and the Crimea. Later as a Commissioned Boatman, H.M. Coastguard, at the Northend Station, Deal, Kent, he was awarded the R.H.S. in bronze for rescuing Henry Irvine, a Boatman of Deal on 30 September 1871. With a dangerous surf on the beach, a boat containing Irvine turned over. Grandfield rushed into the surf, lifted the boat and landed the man on the beach. (R.H.S. Case No. 18,840). With copied research.
