Primrose) minor contact marks, good very fine (5) £650-750

D.S.M. London Gazette 6 April 1918. ‘... for services in vessels of the Royal Navy employed on patrol and escort duty during the period 1st January to 31st December 1917.’

William Henry Hicks was born in Devonport on 20 May 1881. An Engine Smith by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class on 26 May 1902. He was confirmed in that rank in March 1904 when on
Victorious and was advanced to E.R.A. 3rd Class in August 1905 when on Niobe; E.R.A. 2nd Class in August 1909 when on Blake and E.R.A. 1st Class in August 1914 when on Hannibal. He served on the escort ship Primrose for most of the war and was awarded the D.S.M. for his services aboard her during 1917. Awarded the Royal Navy L.S. & G.C. in June 1917.
