D.S.M. London Gazette 22 May 1917. ‘... in recognition of services in the Destroyer Patrol Flotillas, Armed Boarding Steamers etc., during the period which ended on the 30th September, 1916.’

John Fish was born in Duckinfield, Cheshire on 24 June 1872. A Fitter and Turner by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Articer 4th Class on 11 January 1898. Serving on Colossus, September 1898-April 1901, he was confirmed as E.R.A. 4th Class in June 1900 and advanced to E.R.A. 3rd Class in January 1901. On Pearl, December 1901-November 1904, he saw service in the Boer War. Fish was promoted to E.R.A. 2nd Class in January 1905 when based at Vivid II; was ranked as Acting C.E.R.A. 2nd Class in August 1909 when on Leander and confirmed in that rank in August the same year. He attained the rank of C.E.R.A. 1st Class in July 1915. He served aboard the destroyer Ruby, during the early years of the war and was awarded the D.S.M. for his services. C.E.R.A. 1st Class Fish was demobilised on 4 February 1920.
