Willis Oakshott was born in Wickham on 29 June 1851. Entering the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer on 24 September 1875, he was confirmed in that rank in April 1876. Served on Coquette, January 1883-October 1885, being present at Suakin during 1885. Attaining the rank of Chief Engine Room Artificer in November 1887 when on Dolphin, he was invalided from the service on 8 June 1900 and died in September that year.
