51 ‘Sierra Leone 1898-99’ clasps to H.M.S. Alecto.

George Frederick Powell was born in Dover, Kent on 21 October 1865. A Boilermaker by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class on 23 April 1889 and was confirmed in that rank in March 1892. He was promoted to E.R.A. 3rd Class in September 1893 when on Inflexible. Served on Alecto, March 1897-April 1898, being appointed an E.R.A. 2nd Class in September 1897 and was awarded the Queen’s medal for service in Sierra Leone during 1898. He served on Perseus, March 1901-April 1904, being appointed C.E.R.A. 2nd Class in April 1901 and serving in the expedition to Somaliland, 1902-04. Posted to Pembroke II in April 1904, he was awarded the Royal Navy L.S. & G.C. and was invalided on 17 April 1905.
