John James Williams was born in Falmouth, Cornwall on 30 October 1873. A Boiler Maker by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class on 28 October 1895. He served on Barrosa, July 1897-May 1901, being confirmed in his rank in September 1897, promoted to E.R.A. 3rd Class in October 1898 and seeing service in the Boer War. Further promotions followed, being advanced to E.R.A. 2nd Class in October 1903 on Defiance; Acting C.E.R.A. 2nd Class in April 1904 at Vivid II; C.E.R.A. 2nd Class in April 1905 on Sirius and C.E.R.A. 1st Class in March 1910 at Vivid II. He served throughout the Great War, mostly based at Vivid II. With copied service paper.
