Leonard James Needham was born in Plumstead, Kent on 16 August 1869. A Fitter & Turner by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class on 7 December 1894 and was confirmed in that rank in March 1898. Promoted to E.R.A. 3rd Class in September 1899 when on Pegasus, he saw service in the Boer War when on Sappho, August 1900-September 1901. Needham was advanced to E.R.A. 2nd Class in September 1903 when at Pembroke; C.E.R.A. 2nd Class in January 1906 when on Cadmus and C.E.R.A. 1st Class in December 1910 when on Triton. Needham served throughout the Great War, serving on the armoured cruiser Sutlej, July 1914-August 1915; for the rest of the wartime period he was based at St. George and Pembroke. With copied service papers.
