Robert Platt was born in Tring, Hertfordshire on 23 April 1876. A Fitter & Turner by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class on 7 January 1898. Serving on Philomel, December 1898-July 1902, he was confirmed in his rank in February 1899, advanced to E.R.A. 3rd Class in January 1901, and served on the vessel during the Boer War. He was advanced to E.R.A. 2nd Class in January 1905 when on Tenedos and E.R.A. 1st Class in January 1910 when on Leander. Platt was awarded the Royal Navy L.S. & G.C. when serving on the sloop Fantome, May 1911-May 1913. During this same period he was briefly disrated to E.R.A. 2nd Class for disobedience. Recovering his rank Platt served throughout the Great War, serving on the destroyer, Manly, January 1915-April 1917 and May 1917-June 1918. For most of the war H.M.S. Manly served with the Harwich Force. With copied service paper.
