Ernest Dunn was born in Stonehouse, Plymouth on 6 March 1875. An Engine Smith by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class on 13 May 1896, being confirmed in that rank in September 1897. He served on Hermione, April 1898-August 1901, being advanced to E.R.A. 3rd Class, May 1899 and serving in the China War 1900. Promoted to E.R.A. 2nd Class in March 1903 when at Vivid II and C.E.R.A. 2nd Class in November 1912 when at the same base (Devonport). During the Great War he served on London, February 1914-October 1916 and, promoted to C.E.R.A. 1st Class in October 1917, served on London again, May 1918-March 1920. For his service aboard London during July-November 1918 he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal.

H.M.S. London was a ‘London’ Class pre-dreadnought battleship launched in 1899. At the beginning of the war she formed part of the 5th Battle Squadron of the Channel Fleet, based at Portland. In 1915 she and her sisters operated in the Mediterranean. In May 1918 London was converted to and operated as a minelayer. With copied service paper.
