Lewis Charles Burgess was born in Bath, Somerset on 14 September 1890. A Fitter & Turner by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 5th Class on 20 April 1914 and was confirmed in that rank in October 1918. Served on the armoured cruiser Endymion, June 1915-March 1918. Awarded the Royal Navy L.S. & G.C. as an E.R.A. 1st Class on the battleship Rodney.
