James Sennett was born in Morice Town, Devon on 22 November 1872. Entering the Royal Navy in January 1894, he attained the rank of C.E.R.A. 1st Class in April 1910. Served on Niobe, December 1898-June 1901. Awarded the Royal Navy L.S. & G.C. in 1909 when on Suffolk.
During the Great War he served on the 2nd class cruiser Talbot, July 1914-July 1918. Demobilised in March 1919.
