Ernest George Betterton was born in Poulton, Gloucestershire on 16 January 1856. Entering the Royal Navy in April 1878, he attained the rank of Chief Engine Room Artificer in April 1890. Awarded the L.S. & G.C. in 1888 when on the guardship Asia. Pensioned in August 1898. With copied service paper.
