Edwin Francis St. John was born in Saltash, Cornwall on 29 December 1858. Entered the Royal Navy in September 1880. Attained the rate of Chief Engine Room Artificer in August 1893; promoted to Artificer Engineer in 1898; Engineer Lieutenant in 1905 and retired as Engineer Lieutenant Commander in July 1915. Awarded the L.S. & G.C. in 1891 aboard torpedo cruiser Cossack. With copied service paper and later service details.
