Roland Laughton Champion was born in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire on 5 July 1896. Educated at Tottenham Grammar School and a Librarian by occupation, he attested for the 2nd/9th Middlesex Regiment on 16 September 1914. He transferred to the Inns of Court O.T.C. in November 1915 and gained a commission in the 1st/20th Battalion London Regiment. He entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 9 October 1916 and was killed in action, shot by a sniper, on 17 March 1917. He was buried in Bedford House Cemetery, nr Ypres, Belgium. He was the son of William Ambrose and Catherine Maude Champion of 187 High Street, Waltham Cross.
Sold with copied service papers, m.i.c. and an extract from a local newspaper with details of his death and a tribute from his commanding officer.
