The only man on Penelope’s roll in this rate.

John George Mugford was born in Stoke Damerel, Devonshire in September 1847 and entered the Royal Navy as a Ship’s Steward Assistant in April 1871. A Ship’s Steward 2nd Class by the time of his service in H.M.S. Penelope (September 1881 to February 1885), he was advanced to 1st Class of his rate in the same period. Mugford was pensioned ashore in September 1885 and settled in Amesbury, Wiltshire, where he was publican of the King’s Arms Hotel (modern day photograph of the Hotel included), and where he served on the Parish Council and played for the local cricket team. He died in June 1907; sold with a file of research, including copied service record and birth & death certificates.
