Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, dated reverse, 1 clasp, Alexandria 11th July (W. E. Daniels, W.R. Svt., H.M.S. Penelope) edge nicks, good very fine £130-150

William Edward Daniels was born in Harwich, Essex in August 1862, the son of a Coast Guard boatman, and entered the Royal Navy as a Domestic 3rd Class in November 1878. Elevated to War Room Servant and Domestic 1st Class during his subsequent service in H.M.S. Penelope (May 1879 to May 1887), he was discharged ashore as ‘no longer required’ in May 1889. Daniels did, however, return to sea in the Mercantile Marine during the Great War, was awarded the British War & Mercantile Marine Medals and died in Harwich in December 1943; sold with a file of research, including copied service record and birth, marriage & death certificates.
